Autumn Movies & TV Shows: Because Apparently We Need a Soundtrack for Wearing a Sweater

There is something about autumn that makes me want to cancel all my plans, put on a sweater, make a suspiciously large amount of tea, and watch a fictional person have a much more interesting life than I do.

Summer is for going places.

Winter is for hibernating.

Spring is for pretending you are going to become a completely different person.

But autumn?

Autumn is for watching things.

Specifically, watching movies and TV shows that make you feel like you should be sitting beside a fireplace in a charming little town, despite the fact that you may actually be sitting on your couch surrounded by laundry you have been “meaning to fold” since Tuesday.

And honestly? That's fine.

So grab your favourite blanket, put on your comfiest sweater, and let's get into some autumn movies and TV shows that just feel like fall.

Gilmore Girls

Obviously.

If autumn had a television show, it would be Gilmore Girls.

Small-town streets. Coffee. Sweaters. Leaves. Bookstores. More coffee. Questionable romantic decisions. People somehow knowing everyone's business.

Stars Hollow basically exists to make the rest of us feel like our lives are severely lacking in decorative pumpkins.

And while we may not all live in a picturesque Connecticut town where everyone has time to stand around discussing town meetings, we can absolutely pretend.

Bonus points if you drink an unreasonable amount of coffee while watching.

Hocus Pocus

Is it technically a Halloween movie?

Yes.

Does that mean you have to wait until October 31st to watch it?

Absolutely not.

Hocus Pocus is one of those movies that immediately makes it feel like October, even if you're watching it while it's still 22°C outside and you're questioning whether putting on a sweater is actually a good idea.

It's witches, black cats, talking books, questionable teenage decisions and three sisters who really need to work on their communication skills.

A classic.

You've Got Mail

This is one of those movies that makes you want to move to New York, open an adorable bookstore, fall in love with someone you dislike, and somehow afford an apartment that would cost approximately $4,000,000 today.

But that's beside the point.

You've Got Mail is peak cozy autumn energy.

Bookstores. Coffee shops. New York. Leaves. Internet romance before the internet became whatever it is now.

It also makes me nostalgic for a time when receiving an email felt exciting rather than like opening your inbox and discovering seventeen promotional emails you don't remember signing up for.

Friends

Friends is basically the television equivalent of your favourite pair of sweatpants.

You can put it on at almost any point and immediately feel like you're hanging out with people you know.

And yes, some of the fashion has aged about as well as a forgotten pumpkin latte in the back of the fridge.

But autumn Friends episodes just hit differently.

The apartments. The coffee shop. The oversized sweaters. The ridiculous Thanksgiving episodes.

And somehow everyone is always hanging out at Central Perk instead of doing literally anything productive.

Honestly, relatable.

Harry Potter

Now, I am not saying you need to watch the entire Harry Potter series every autumn.

But I am also not not saying that.

There's something about Hogwarts in autumn that feels like the cinematic equivalent of being wrapped in a blanket.

The candles. The fireplaces. The castle. The scarves. The enormous amount of homework.

Okay, maybe not the homework.

But the aesthetic?

Absolutely.

It makes me want to read a book, drink something warm and dramatically stare out a window while leaves fall outside.

Unfortunately, I have bills.

Practical Magic

If your ideal autumn evening involves witches, sisterhood, old houses, candles, magic and a tiny bit of questionable decision-making, Practical Magic belongs on the list.

It's cozy without being aggressively wholesome.

Which is important.

Because sometimes you don't want a movie that teaches you a life lesson.

Sometimes you just want Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman to live in an enormous magical house and deal with their problems while looking fabulous.

Gilmore Girls: Again

Yes, I'm putting it twice.

No, I will not apologize.

Because there is a difference between watching Gilmore Girls and living through an autumnal Gilmore Girls phase.

The second one involves:

  • Drinking coffee like it is a personality trait

  • Suddenly wanting to read 47 books

  • Considering moving to a tiny town

  • Wearing a sweater every day

  • Googling how much small-town houses cost

  • Becoming emotionally attached to a fictional diner

It's a lifestyle.

 When Harry Met Sally...

Another autumn classic.

New York in the fall. Cozy sweaters. Long walks. Conversations about relationships. Friends slowly becoming something more.

And, most importantly, the feeling that everyone in New York apparently has endless time to walk around talking about their feelings.

Meanwhile, I have to remember to take something out of the freezer for dinner.

Still, When Harry Met Sally... is peak autumn movie material.

The Holiday

Is The Holiday technically a Christmas movie?

Yes.

Am I including it in an autumn list?

Also yes.

Because there is a very specific period between Halloween and Christmas where nobody really knows what day it is anymore.

The leaves are still falling, Christmas decorations are appearing in stores, and you're simultaneously craving pumpkin spice and peppermint.

So why not start The Holiday early?

There are no rules.

We're adults.

We can make our own questionable streaming decisions.

The Office

Not necessarily an autumn show.

But hear me out.

The Office is perfect for those evenings when you want something familiar playing in the background while you do absolutely nothing.

Or fold laundry.

Or scroll on your phone while pretending you're watching.

Or watch the same episode you've already seen approximately fourteen times.

Sometimes you don't need a cinematic masterpiece.

Sometimes you need Jim looking at the camera.

And that's enough.

The Real Autumn Movie Is Your Couch

At the end of the day, I think the best part about autumn isn't actually finding the perfect movie or creating some elaborate seasonal watchlist.

It's making your own little cozy ritual.

Maybe it's a favourite movie you've watched a hundred times.

Maybe it's a TV show you've been meaning to start.

Maybe it's rewatching something from your childhood.

Maybe it's watching an absolutely terrible reality show while eating snacks and refusing to acknowledge that you should probably be doing something else.

And that's the beauty of autumn.

You don't have to make it productive.

You don't have to romanticize every single moment.

You don't have to wake up at 5 a.m., journal beside a pumpkin, drink homemade apple cider and read 30 pages of a book before sunrise.

You can just...

watch the movie.

Put on the sweater.

Make the snack.

Light the candle.

Let the laundry remain unfolded for another 90 minutes.

It's autumn.

We're busy being cozy.

And honestly, that's enough.

Stay Warped and Twist as Ever!

Eve
