Getting Organized: Tips and Tricks for a Tidy Space
As autumn rolls in, I get hit with the decluttering bug. It’s a powerful urge, though sometimes it feels bigger than my ability to tackle it all! Here are some of the best tips I’ve picked up for organizing that can help reduce stress and create systems to keep your space tidy. Remember, everyone’s different, so not all of these may work for you, but hopefully, you’ll find a few gems!
1. Hold Off on Buying New Containers
It’s tempting to buy new containers when you’re in organizing mode, but resist the urge until after you’ve sorted your space. Buying containers first means you might end up forcing your items to fit into containers, rather than the other way around. This can lead to leftover containers or not enough of the right size.
2. Break Up the Space into Sections
Tackling an entire room at once can feel overwhelming. Instead, divide the task into smaller sections. For example, start by putting your sheets in the wash or decluttering your closet. Breaking it down makes the task feel more manageable and less daunting.
3. Remove Recycling, Garbage, and Dishes
A lot of clutter comes from products without a designated place and packaging. Small tags, boxes, and other bits can create a mess. Make it a habit to deal with these as you go—break down boxes and remove trash promptly to keep things in order.
4. Categorize Piles of Items
If you have piles of items, it’s a sign they don’t have a designated spot. Take the time to categorize them. For example, if you find a bunch of random sunglasses on your desk, sort through them and find a container for them.
5. Measure Your Space Before Buying Containers
There’s nothing worse than getting home with new containers only to find they don’t fit your space. Measure your shelves or drawers before shopping for containers to ensure they’ll fit perfectly.
6. Invest in a Label Maker
A label maker can be a game changer. It’s fantastic for labeling containers, especially if you can’t see inside them. Labels help you quickly find what you need and keep everything in its designated spot.
7. Organize for You and Your Household
It’s easy to get caught up in comparing your space to those you see on social media. Remember, your organizing systems should work for you and your household, not someone else’s. It’s okay if your home doesn’t look like a magazine cover—it just needs to function well for you.
8. Containers Don’t Have to Be Expensive
You don’t need to spend a fortune on storage solutions. Dollarama and Dollar Tree offer great options at affordable prices (usually between $1.50 and $4.00). Marshalls and Homesense also have good finds. Ikea is another great place for affordable options. If you prefer more expensive bins, that’s up to you, but having a few extras on hand can be useful.
9. Use Memory Boxes
I love keeping a memory box for little treasures and keepsakes. It’s a great way to store items you might want to scrapbook later. It keeps your memories safe and organized in one place.
10. Clothing Tip: If It Doesn’t Fit, Don’t Keep It
Don’t hang onto clothes that don’t fit or that you never wear. I used to keep items with the hope that I’d wear them someday, but it rarely happened. Focus on keeping clothes that you love and that fit well, which will make your closet more enjoyable and functional.
