Must-Have Work From Home Essentials for a Comfortable and Efficient Setup

Congratulations! Whether you’ve just landed your first full-time remote job (lucky you!), started your own business, or you’re a parent squeezing in some extra work while the little ones sleep, working from home is a game-changer. Sure, you’ve got the basics down—like needing a computer (obviously, right?)—but what else can you do to make your home office more efficient, organized, and dare I say, enjoyable?

As someone who has worked several remote jobs and has helped others set up their home offices, I can tell you: finding the right tools makes all the difference. Fun fact: My husband joined the remote work-from-home club last year, and I had the best time helping him create his workspace! I love everything about tech and office gadgets (seriously, it’s a passion), and nothing beats getting to play with new setups—especially when a corporate budget is involved!

In this post, I’m going to walk you through my absolute essentials for working from home, along with a few fun add-ons to make your workspace truly yours. I’ll also be linking some of my favorite products, all of which my family and I have been using since 2019. Let’s dive in!

This version keeps the conversational and enthusiastic vibe but refines the flow and clarity for readability. It sets a clear expectation for the readers and transitions smoothly into the list of essentials.

The Basics

Basics that you need to consider when purchasing equipment

  • Ergonomic essentials: desk, chair, mouse, keyboard
  • Tech basics: laptop, monitor, and internet connection
  • Communication tools: headphones, mic, and webcam

The excitement I feel when someone asks for help picking out or setting up their desk is akin to the thrill I used to experience on the first day of school—decorating lockers, customizing agendas, or crafting the perfect stationery set. It’s a rush of joy that never gets old!

Recently, my husband received a budget for his new job and needed to figure out what he required for his home office. Eve and I eagerly dove into Amazon, exploring options. While you can certainly find the basics, there are also items that add a little extra sparkle and make your workspace truly shine.

When setting up your office area or room, start with the bare essentials. If your employer provides a starter kit or budget, use what they give you initially and then upgrade as needed. This approach allows you to have a functional workspace while saving room in your budget for those special items that enhance both efficiency and inspiration.

Given that you’ll be spending long hours at your desk—whether it’s 8.5 hours a day or every night—it’s crucial to invest in equipment that promotes long-term comfort and well-being. This is particularly important if you’re over the age of 30, have previous injuries, or simply want to avoid discomfort. Investing in high-quality equipment now will reduce the likelihood of needing replacements in the future and minimize overall soreness.

This combines the practical advice on initial setup with the importance of investing in quality equipment for long-term comfort.

Desks:

I always recommend a sit-stand desk. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a good one. There are many affordable options to suit all budgets.

For example, my best friend opted for a sit-stand metal frame from Ikea and paired it with a butcher block countertop, creating a custom desk for under $500.

Sit-stand desks come with various control options: manual cranks or electric, and they are available in a wide range of colors and sizes. Be sure to measure your space and choose a desk that fits your needs.

While a sit-stand desk might seem like a luxury, it’s incredibly beneficial for your body. Standing periodically can help alleviate fatigue and keep you alert—sometimes, standing is the only thing that keeps me awake during long work sessions!

Below, I’ll share some of the desks we’ve used over the years that have proven effective. Additional details and recommendations will be provided under each photo.

Chairs:

Chairs make a huge difference in your comfort and productivity, and there are plenty of add-ons like footstools that can enhance your experience. However, the key is to start with a good chair tailored to your specific needs—factors like height, preferred sitting positions, and mobility all matter. For example, I’m 5’10” and love to cross my legs and shift around in my chair frequently. For years, I’d twist myself into uncomfortable positions in standard office chairs, only to end up sore, stiff, or with my feet falling asleep.

With ergonomic chairs, it’s crucial to customize the setup for your body rather than just using it straight out of the box. My sister Eve watched me struggle with Costco specials and Staples chairs for ages. She lovingly scolded me for sitting awkwardly because those positions weren’t ideal for my body—and I’m sure she got tired of hearing me complain! So, she did her research and found what I now consider the ultimate office chair, perfectly suited for my needs.

Pipersong Pro Meditation Chair - you can buy directly from them or from a link on our amazon storefront. When I purchased this the cost was covered by my company, I know it's expensive but 100% worth it.

Keyboard and Mouse:

This is where function meets style—your keyboard and mouse setup can be ergonomic, fancy, or just plain fun, depending on your needs. Personally, I love an ergonomic mouse, but ergonomic keyboards? They break my brain! Instead, I gravitate toward colorful or typewriter-style keyboards that bring some flair to my workspace.

Wireless setups are awesome in theory, but if you’re anything like me and forget to charge things, you’ll end up using it with a cord anyway. So, it’s good to have both options on hand! There’s actually an entire side of TikTok dedicated to keyboards, from gamers to office workers, showing how this seemingly basic tool can be so much more than just functional.

Here are some of the keyboards and mice we’ve purchased over the years that have worked well for us.

Laptop:

The Best Laptop for Your Lifestyle

The debate over which brand is better—Apple, HP, Microsoft, or Chromebook—can be quite controversial. When buying tech, especially laptops, it’s crucial to consider compatibility. Thankfully, many devices and accessories are now becoming universal, especially with the rise of USB-C connections.

Work Laptops vs. Personal Use

If you’re working from home for a company, they typically provide you with a work laptop, so no worries there. However, if you’re purchasing a laptop for personal or business use, I highly recommend sitting down to map out your needs. Ask yourself:

  • What will I be using this device for?
  • Am I comfortable with the operating system?

You don’t want to spend money on a laptop and then struggle with it because you’re unfamiliar with the OS.

Storage and Software Considerations

One often-overlooked factor is storage. If you’ll be working with large files—like photos, videos, or creative projects—you’ll want to make sure your laptop has sufficient storage. For many cloud-based users, a Chromebook could be a great low-cost solution, but if you’re storing lots of files locally, you’ll need something with more space.

Additionally, think about software and upkeep costs:

  • Will you need to pay for an antivirus subscription?
  • How often will you need to upgrade to a new operating system?
  • What software will you need, and are there free or included options to start with?

My Personal Experience: Apple & Chromebook

As for my personal opinion (I know, come at me! 😄), I’m an Apple user through and through. I own everything Apple because I prioritize ease of use and longevity over total customization. My first MacBook Pro, which I bought in 2012, lasted until 2017 before finally giving out.

When that happened, I decided to try something different and bought a Chromebook since most of my programs were cloud-based. Chromebooks are fantastic if you’re doing cloud-based work—they’re lightweight, affordable, and portable. However, if you want to store photos or other large files locally, it won’t be enough unless you’re willing to pay for extra Google Drive space. A Chromebook is essentially a tablet with a built-in keyboard, pretending to be a laptop.

I now use both a MacBook Pro and a desktop Mac, both purchased from Apple’s refurbished section. (Yes, that exists! And it’s the best-kept secret.) Apple also offers deals for students and business owners. If you have an Apple store nearby, you can set up a business account with proof of your business, and you’ll get 10% off, plus other perks. I had no idea about this until after I made my purchases, but once you set up the account, it stays linked to your Apple account.

Other Tips and Tricks

Another perk of using Apple products is that I’ve never had to buy antivirus software. Also, while I don’t use Microsoft Office, nor Apple’s built-in office tools, I absolutely love Google Workspace. It’s incredibly easy to use, and if you’re familiar with Excel, you’ll find Google Sheets and other Google tools very intuitive.

Monitor:

Choosing the Right Monitor for Your Laptop Setup

If you’re working from a laptop, your company may or may not provide it for you. Personally, I love a laptop and monitor setup because it offers the best of both worlds: the flexibility of a portable laptop and the efficiency of a dual-screen workspace.

27-Inch Monitors

Monitor Stands

Benefits of a Laptop and Monitor Setup

Having a monitor connected to your laptop not only gives you more screen real estate but also helps put you into a work mindset. I highly recommend choosing a monitor that’s larger than your laptop screen—especially if you wear glasses like I do. The extra space makes a big difference for both comfort and productivity.

For example, I typically opt for a 27-inch monitor, while my husband went all out and got a curved monitor because he had the budget for it. It really comes down to your space, your needs, and what works best for your eyes and comfort.

Ergonomics and Adjustability

When choosing a monitor, I suggest finding one that adjusts up and down and also tilts, to ensure it’s ergonomically suitable for you. A well-positioned monitor can reduce strain on your neck and back, making long workdays more comfortable.

A monitor stand can also be a great addition. It helps elevate your screen to eye level, further improving your posture. I’ll talk more about useful add-ons like this later.

Communication Tools:

The communication tools you choose can be essential depending on your role and the nature of your work.

Headsets

Choosing the Right Headset for Work

When it comes to audio for work, you can use headphones, earbuds, or headsets, and most of them work great—especially if you prefer the wireless options. Wireless devices, like earbuds, are functional and help reduce cable clutter, but they do come with a few downsides. For example, they can lose charge midway through the workday or may not always offer the best clarity for long conversations.

Having worked in a call center for over 10 years, I’ve definitely experienced my share of bad headsets! From my experience, I find that Logitech offers some of the most consistent headsets. They’re durable, reliable, and built to last.

On the other hand, a family friend, who drives a truck and deals with a lot of background noise, swears by the BlueParrott headset. It’s excellent at noise cancellation, making it ideal for loud environments like his.

My Personal Favorites

As for me, I love my AirPods (specifically the AirPods 3). I tried the AirPods Pro, but they didn’t fit my ears comfortably. I also have a pair of Beats that I got on sale during Black Friday at Walmart for $90 back in 2018. They’ve been fantastic, and I love that they come with a corded option—no battery worries, just plug and play! Even though they’re more expensive now, they’ve proven to be a solid investment with no issues so far.

At the end of the day, the choice of headphones or headsets depends on your needs: wireless for convenience or corded for reliability. Brands like Logitech, BlueParrott, and Apple offer great options for different environments and preferences. Just make sure to choose one that works for your style, comfort, and daily demands!

Microphones: Get the Best Sound for Your Needs!

When it comes to capturing crisp and clear audio, microphones play a crucial role. Whether you’re chatting with friends or creating professional content, here’s a fun guide to help you pick the perfect mic:

Built-In Microphones: Your Everyday Sidekick

  • Headset Microphones: If you’re using a headset with a built-in mic, you’re already in the game! These are great for everyday calls and Zoom meetings. I personally stick with the built-in mic on my headset for most of my chats—it’s handy and does the trick for casual conversations.

External Microphones: The Star of the Show

  • Blue Yeti Microphone: Ready to up your game? The Blue Yeti is your new best friend. Here’s why:
  • Multiple Personalities: This mic can do it all with its different recording modes—cardioid for solo talks, bidirectional for interviews, omnidirectional for group chats, and stereo for that rich sound. It’s like having a superhero squad in one mic!
  • Crystal Clear Sound: Say goodbye to mumbling and background noise. The Blue Yeti delivers top-notch audio quality, making your voiceovers and podcasts sound like they’re straight from a studio.
  • Easy Peasy: With simple controls for volume and gain, it’s user-friendly enough for beginners and pros alike. Plus, it looks pretty cool on your desk!

Choosing Your Mic: Fun Tips

  • Purpose: What’s your mic mission? For casual chats, your built-in mic is all you need. But for podcasting or voiceovers, an external mic like the Blue Yeti is a game-changer.
  • Sound Quality: Go for a mic that makes you sound fabulous. Look for features like noise cancellation to keep distractions at bay. Your voice deserves to be heard loud and clear!
  • Budget: No need to break the bank. Built-in mics are cost-effective, but if you’re ready to splurge for quality, an external mic can be a great investment.
  • Setup: Make sure your new mic fits seamlessly with your gear. External mics usually connect via USB, USB-C or XLR cables—check compatibility to avoid tech hiccups.

For day-to-day conversations, a built-in mic on your headset is just fine. But if you’re aiming for high-quality recordings, the Blue Yeti is a fantastic choice. It’s like adding a touch of professional magic to your setup. Choose the mic that fits your needs, and get ready to sound amazing!

Webcams

In today’s world, where virtual meetings, training sessions, and live streams have become the norm, having a good webcam is more essential than ever.

Here’s a playful guide to help you navigate your webcam choices:

Built-In Webcams: The Basics

  • Laptop Cameras: Most laptops come with built-in webcams, which are handy for quick video calls and catching up with friends. They’re great for basic use but might not offer the best clarity or flexibility for more serious tasks.

External Webcams: The Upgrade You Need

  • Why Upgrade?: For training sessions, live streams, or any situation where video quality matters, an external webcam is a game-changer. It provides better clarity, color accuracy, and often a more stable connection compared to built-in options.
  • Logitech Webcams: When it comes to external webcams, Logitech is a top choice. Here’s why:
  • Exceptional Clarity: Logitech webcams deliver sharp, high-definition video that ensures you look your best on screen.
  • Affordable Excellence: You don’t have to spend a fortune to get great quality. Logitech offers webcams that balance price with performance, giving you excellent value.
  • Stability: Known for their reliability, Logitech webcams provide consistent performance, so you won’t have to worry about your video cutting out mid-call.

Choosing the Right Webcam

  • Purpose: Consider what you need the webcam for. If it’s for professional meetings and streaming, go for an external webcam. For casual chats, your laptop’s built-in camera might suffice.
  • Compatibility: Ensure the webcam you choose is compatible with your computer. Most modern webcams work with both Windows and macOS, but checking compatibility can save you from future tech headaches.
  • Resolution: Aim for at least 1080p resolution for clear and crisp video. Higher resolutions are available if you need even better quality.
  • Features: Look for features like autofocus, light correction, and a built-in microphone for added convenience.

Just remember to check compatibility with your computer and enjoy clearer, more professional video calls!

They’re like the bodyguards for your electronics, shielding them from voltage spikes caused by lightning, power outages, or electrical faults.

Why You Need One:

  1. Protects Your Gear: Surge protectors guard your computer, printer, and other gadgets from unexpected power surges. Without one, your expensive equipment could be at risk.

Reliable Internet Service: The Backbone of Productivity

In today’s connected world, having a reliable internet connection is crucial for productivity and smooth operation. Whether you’re video conferencing, uploading files, or just browsing, your internet service can make or break your workday.

Why It Matters:

  1. Seamless Connectivity: A stable connection means fewer disruptions during important video calls and a smoother experience when collaborating online.
  2. Efficiency Boost: Fast internet speeds can significantly enhance your productivity by reducing load times and preventing delays.
  3. Stress Reduction: Say goodbye to the frustration of dropped connections and lag. A reliable service keeps your workday running without unnecessary interruptions.
