When Is It Actually Time to Decorate for the Next Season? (Because Michaels Thinks Halloween Is in June)
You know that moment when you walk into Michaels in the middle of June, ready to grab some summer BBQ supplies... and boom — you’re ambushed by a 6-foot skeleton and aisles of glittery pumpkins?
Yeah. Same.
Apparently, Halloween is now a summer holiday — at least according to craft stores. But it raises the question:
When is it actually appropriate to start decorating for the next season?
Sure, the stores are way ahead (and we’ll get into why), but for the rest of us who don’t live on Pinterest boards, where’s the sweet spot between being seasonally savvy and going full holiday-mode while it’s still 90 degrees outside?
Let’s talk about it — plus I’ll share some of my favorite little seasonal swaps that help me feel festive without turning my house into a themed amusement park.
Why Is Halloween in June? (Retail Logic 101)
Retail stores live in the future. Like, way in the future.
They’re thinking: “If someone wants to hand-knit a full fall wreath or DIY a 12-foot haunted graveyard in their front yard, they probably need more than 3 weeks to prep.”
Fair. But for the rest of us?
It’s giving seasonal whiplash.
So When Should You Decorate?
There are no laws (except HOA rules, which — yikes), but here’s a loose breakdown I follow to keep things feeling timely and fun:
-
Spring (Mar – May)
Bust out the florals, pastel everything, and that one “Hello Sunshine” sign you forgot you owned. -
Summer (Jun – Aug)
Bright colors, lemon everything, beachy vibes, and maybe a patriotic touch if you’re into it. Bonus points for a flamingo or two. -
Fall (Sep – Nov)
This is your official pumpkin season. Bring on the cozy throws, cinnamon-scented candles, and yes — spooky stuff can start in late September (earlier if you live for Halloween). -
Winter (Dec – Feb)
After Thanksgiving, it’s game on: lights, trees, snowflakes, Mariah Carey. You know the drill. After New Year’s, keep the wintery vibes, ditch the tinsel.
🍂 My Favorite (Not-Too-Crazy) Seasonal Swaps
If you're not into full-on seasonal makeovers (me neither — mostly), here are a few easy things I do that make a big difference:
-
Throw pillows & blankets: The easiest way to change the vibe without breaking the bank or your back.
-
Front door wreath: I like to swap mine out with the seasons — bonus points if it makes my Amazon driver smile.
-
Candles & scents: Citrus in spring, coconut in summer, cinnamon in fall, and vanilla or pine in winter. Instant mood change.
-
Table decor: Seasonal napkins, mini pumpkins, or even themed salt and pepper shakers. Yes, I own ghost-shaped ones.
-
Outdoor stuff: A festive doormat, planters with seasonal flowers, maybe a garden flag if I’m feeling extra.
Final Thoughts: You Do You (But Maybe Hide the Christmas Tree Until November?)
Look — if decorating for Halloween in June makes you happy, go for it. If you’re more of a “decorate the day before” type, that’s cool too. There’s no wrong way to do it (unless you're still rocking your Christmas wreath in April — we might need to talk).
At the end of the day, your home should make you feel good. Whether that means pumpkins in August or waiting until the first fall leaf drops, the season is yours to celebrate.
So tell me — are you Team “Decorate ASAP” or Team “Let’s Not Rush It”?
Either way, I’ll probably see you at Michaels in June, side-eyeing the Halloween aisle... while secretly grabbing a spooky mug.
Always Stay Warped and Twisted As Ever,
Eve
