Why Everything Feels So Complicated Now

Why Everything Feels So Complicated Now

Lately I’ve noticed something strange about modern life.

“Why’d you have to go and make things so complicated?”
Avril Lavigne, Complicated

Nothing is actually that dramatic… but everything feels weirdly complicated.

Not big, life-altering complicated. More like everyday life has quietly become a series of tiny administrative tasks that never seem to end.

Ordering groceries requires an app, a login, a delivery window, and a follow-up email asking you to rate the experience.

Booking an appointment means navigating an online portal, resetting a password you forgot, confirming through a text message, and then receiving three reminder emails.

Even something simple like watching TV somehow involves four streaming services and the question of which one has the show now.

Sometimes I genuinely miss the simplicity of things that used to be… simple.

The Life Admin No One Talks About

One thing I’ve realized as I’ve gotten older is that adulthood isn’t necessarily harder than we expected.

It’s just full of constant life admin.

Emails to respond to.
Forms to fill out.
Subscriptions to cancel.
Appointments to schedule.
Passwords to reset…. Far too many steps

And none of it feels important enough to be overwhelming on its own.

But together? It creates this background hum of responsibility that never really turns off.

For people with ADHD especially, that mental load can feel amplified. Every small task requires a decision, and every decision requires energy.

Sometimes it feels like half of adulthood is just keeping track of things.

Too Many Choices, Not More Freedom

We’re often told that having more options makes life better.

More services.
More technology.
More convenience.

But lately I’ve started wondering if we crossed a line somewhere between helpful and overwhelming.

Need groceries? There are five delivery apps.
Want to watch a movie? Check six platforms.
Looking for productivity tools? There are hundreds.

Instead of feeling empowered, it can start to feel like decision fatigue on repeat.

Sometimes the most luxurious thing in the world isn’t convenience — it’s simplicity.

Why Our Brains Feel So Tired

Part of the reason everything feels complicated is because our brains are processing more information than ever before.

Notifications.
Emails.
News.
Group chats.
Work messages.
School reminders.

Even when we’re technically “resting,” our brains are still managing a constant stream of inputs.

It’s not surprising that so many people feel mentally exhausted.

We aren’t just living life — we’re managing systems.

The Quiet Appeal of Simpler Living

This might be why so many people are drawn to slower living lately.

Not because we want to reject technology completely, but because we’re craving a little less friction in everyday life.

Cooking dinner without turning it into a productivity challenge.

Reading a book without checking your phone every five minutes.

Doing something simply because you enjoy it, not because it’s efficient or optimized.

After years of trying to make life more efficient, a lot of us are realizing that efficiency isn’t the same thing as ease.

Maybe Life Isn’t More Complicated — We Just Notice It Now

Another possibility is that life has always been a little complicated.

But as we get older, the layers become more visible.

Responsibilities grow.
People depend on us.
Schedules get fuller.

The difference now is that many of us are becoming more aware of how much mental energy those small things take.

And once you notice it, it’s hard to unsee.

Choosing What Actually Matters

The good news is that awareness creates choice.

We can’t eliminate every task or responsibility, but we can start questioning what actually deserves our attention.

Not every message needs an immediate response.

Not every app needs to stay on our phone.

Not every task needs to be optimized.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is quietly simplify where we can.

Life may never feel perfectly simple again.

But maybe the goal isn’t to remove every complication.

Maybe it’s just learning how to navigate modern life without letting it consume all of our energy.

And honestly, that feels like a pretty good place to start.

Always stay warped and twisted as ever,
Sara
