Winter Aspirations: Taking Back the Season
Growing up with the Canadian winter, I always felt like I was racing against the clock. October would roll in with its spooky vibes, and suddenly—bam—November was gone in a blink. December? Well, it was a blur of holiday chaos, and before I knew it, winter was over. I’d spend more time stressing about the cold than enjoying it. So, two years ago, I decided to take back winter—yes, cue the dramatic music, because I was done with the rush.
The plan? If I could cut down on stress, I could carve out time to dive into new hobbies, crafts, and all the cozy, creative things I love. And my number one stressor? Christmas presents. I always felt like I was running out of time to buy, wrap, and ship gifts for everyone. So, here’s how I flipped the script:
The Christmas Secret: Buy Early, Stress Less
In May of 2022, I had a brilliant idea (pat on the back for me): I made a list of everyone I’d be buying for, then spent some quality time brainstorming gift ideas. By doing this, I realized something amazing—I had 7 whole months to shop! That’s about 14 paychecks, and it meant I could budget out the cost in manageable chunks instead of stressing in December.
But then came the tricky part: where to store the gifts for 7 months?! Enter: the world of adorable photo boxes from Michaels. These cute little storage gems were neutral enough to not scream “Christmas presents,” and big enough to hold all my goodies. I got out my Cricut machine and personalized each box with vinyl labels—one for each family member. Not only did I have a place to store the gifts, but it became a memory box that’s cute enough to keep for years. By August, I was DONE.
Keeping the Tradition Alive... with Yarn!
Last year, I took things up a notch. I taught myself to crochet (yes, me! Who knew?), and decided to crochet new stockings for everyone in the family. You see, my mom used to make each of ours, and with new additions to the family, I thought, “Why not keep the tradition going?” So, I spent my summer learning stitches and making each person a custom, matching stocking. It’s the little things that make the holidays feel extra special.
This year? Well, I’ll admit, I haven’t been quite as on top of my game. And honestly? That’s totally okay. It made me appreciate my past self who was all prepared and organized. This winter, I’m allowing myself to take a breather and enjoy the season without the pressure.
Winter Fun? You Bet!
But just because I’m not stressed doesn’t mean I’ve been slacking! Oh no, I’ve been having way too much fun with new winter hobbies. Currently, I am OBSESSED with felt ornaments—seriously, if you’re on the right side of TikTok, you know exactly what I mean! I’ve been having a blast creating felt letters, and right now, I’m working on a felt bunting that’s going to be the cutest holiday decoration. When it’s done, I’ll try to remember to take a pic and share it.
And of course, crochet is back in full force. No surprise there, right? One simple ball of yarn, and you can create anything—from scarves to blankets to, well, stockings! I’ve been expanding my skills, trying out new stitches, and just loving how creative this hobby lets me get. Plus, it’s cheap to start, so it’s a win-win.
Here’s to a Crafty Winter!
As my winter hobbies grow and evolve, I promise I’ll keep you updated with all the crafty goodness. But for now, I’m just going to enjoy the cozy vibe, the chilly nights, and the joy of making things with my own hands. Stay warm, stay twisted, and keep embracing those little creative moments. After all, winter’s only as fun as we make it!
Stay Warped & Twisted as Ever,
Eve
