Why Reality TV Feels Fake Now (And We’re Not the Only Ones Noticing)

Why Reality TV Feels Fake Now (And We’re Not the Only Ones Noticing)

Why Reality TV Feels Fake Now

Reality TV used to feel fun.

You’d tune in for the talent, the chaos, the competition — not a 4-minute emotional backstory before anyone even stepped on stage.

Now?

It feels like emotional marketing.

Somewhere along the way, competition shows stopped being about the competition and started being about trauma packaging.

And we’re tired.

Not angry.
Not dramatic.
Just… tired.

So we started asking:

Are we getting older and cynical?

Or has something actually shifted?

What Feels Different About Reality TV Now

Here’s what we’ve both noticed:

  • Every contestant has a sob story
  • Emotional music swells before we even see talent
  • Judges react before we’ve formed our own opinion
  • Drama feels edited for maximum tears
  • It’s overstimulating

It’s not just storytelling.

It’s engineered emotion.

And for ADHD brains especially?
That constant emotional intensity is exhausting.

✍️ Sara’s Take

Millennial mom perspective here.

I grew up on early 2000s competition shows. Yes, there were backstories. Yes, there was drama.

But it felt… lighter.

You watched for the talent. The personality. The unpredictability.

Now it feels like producers are telling me how to feel before I even get a chance to decide.

And as someone already navigating burnout and media overload?

It’s just too much.

Sometimes I don’t want a trauma arc.
I just want someone to sing.

✍️ Eve’s Take

Gen Z healthcare worker perspective.

I don’t even have nostalgia bias.

To me, it just feels overproduced.

Like the emotion is doing the heavy lifting instead of the talent.

And when everything is heightened — the music, the lighting, the edits, the backstories — it stops feeling authentic.

It feels manipulated.

And when you work in high-stress environments all day?

The last thing you want at night is more emotional intensity disguised as entertainment.

Is It Emotional Manipulation?

We’re not saying producers are evil masterminds.

But modern competition shows are built for:

  • Viral clips
  • Tear-jerker moments
  • Shareable emotional highs
  • It’s algorithm-driven storytelling.

Which makes sense.

But it also makes it feel less real.

ADHD & Reality TV Overstimulation

Let’s talk about this part.

For ADHD brains, heavy emotional cues + fast edits + dramatic music + high stakes storytelling = overload.

It’s not just “ugh this is cheesy.”

It’s nervous system fatigue.

And when entertainment starts to feel draining instead of relaxing?

That’s worth noticing.

Are We Being Dramatic?

Maybe.

But based on the messages we’ve received?

We’re not the only ones skipping the backstory.

So we’re curious:

Do you sit through the emotional intro…
Or fast-forward to the actual competition?
